Shake, rattle, and roll!

18 04 2008

I have talked to many friends and family, who are all fine.  My parents felt tremors from both earthquakes this morning at their house, to the point that they were awakened by both of them.  (My parents work late night shifts, so they had pretty much just dropped off to sleep before the first one.)

I received an email from a good friend in SE Iowa who stated she also felt tremors from it.  I was glad to hear that a much-closer-to-the-action online friend was doing well after this morning.  I hadn’t even thought that it might reach my old college stomping grounds, so my first thought was for my family and my second was for Mamacita, since I knew she was fairly close to the originating area.  When my friend mentioned it in her email to me, I was completely surprised that it had reached that far.

What I found especially interesting was that I was just telling Neal about the largest U. S. earthquake (or earthquakeS, rather, as there were three major quakes over a period of a few months), which were based along the New Madrid fault line and which changed the course of the Mississippi River.  We both have recently done more research about the fault line and the previous quakes there, which made this both timely (in terms of topic) and untimely (in terms of its actually happening) at the same time.  At least this time no bells rang in Boston to announce that an earthquake had happened in the Midwest, eh?

Thanks to all who emailed, called, or otherwise let us know their status after this morning!
